A special evening awaits music lovers and those celebrating the holiday season when the Boyertown Area Senior High (BASH) Select Choir joins the Reading Choral Society (RCS) and a 19 piece RCS orchestra, to present Handel’s Messiah.

The concert, scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4 at 4:00 pm, will be performed at Boyertown’s senior high school auditorium. Dr. Graham Bier, RCS Music Director, will conduct. This special event is sponsored by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Messiah derives from events in both the Old and New Testaments and was originally performed as an Easter offering in Dublin, Ireland in 1742. Perhaps the best known section is the “Hallelujah Chorus,” which comes from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. The audience will be invited to stand and join in singing during this portion of the performance.

This will be at least the 66th time that RCS will perform the well-known Christmas portion of the Messiah. The first performance is believed to have been in December 1897.

RCS pursues its mission “to perform, foster, and advance choral music with a balance between honoring our heritage and looking to the future.” The group’s educational programs include regular performances with local high school and college choir groups.

In contrast, the Messiah is a new challenge for the BASH Select Choir, an auditioned group composed of 36 of the full choir’s best singers. The group has been under the direction of Mr. Jeffrey K. Brunner since 2013. “This oratorio is a challenge for our young singers, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to sing side- by -side with the Reading Choral Society,” Brunner says.

BASH Select Choir has a busy activity calendar. This winter the group will perform at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, while spring will find them performing at Royal Albert Hall in London, England with many other performances between.

Brunner shares, “The group’s members are considered the best of the best of Boyertown.” They practice every Tuesday evening, and all the group’s members are also members of Concert Choir as well; they meet daily as part of the Boyertown curriculum.

Brunner hopes the community takes advantage of this special opportunity to get in the holiday spirit. “This is going to be one of the highlights of a busy year for my students,” he says, and adds, “I hope many people come out to enjoy our performance and support us.”

Tickets: $15 in advance / $20 at door; Students $10.

Tickets may be ordered online through RCS and through St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 610.369.1024 or stjohnsboyertown.org .
