"The Douglass Township Police Department has seen a recent increase in fraudulent activity on Facebook Market Place. Specifically, scammers are targeting low priced items listed for sale on Market Place and agreeing to complete purchase. The scammers primarily communicate through Facebook marketplace, but may attempt to get the victim to supply a cellular phone number to communicate.
"The scammers will send a fraudulent check with a larger cash amount then the listed item for sale, complete with the marketplace seller's name listed on the check. The scammer will then instruct the victim to deposit the check and send the remaining balance back to the scammer and keep only the portion for the Market Place sale.
"Please be mindful of this scam tactic while privately selling items through any online market place platforms."
