Jason Szczurowski is getting a second chance at a seat on the Boyertown Area School District Board of Directors.
Last night, Szczurowski was appointed to the Region 2 seat vacated by James H. Brophy, who recently resigned from the board. The district announced the vacancy in July and said the appointed director would serve through the board’s reorganization meeting in December 2027.
The appointment marks an unusual turn in Szczurowski’s political fortunes. He was a candidate for the Region 2 seat in the November 2025 election. Szczurowski had the backing of Boyertown Forward, a local group that promotes what it describes as a student-focused approach to school-board leadership. The group’s candidate slate identified Szczurowski as its Region 2 candidate and highlighted his 24 years as a Coast Guard veteran.
Szczurowski ultimately came up short in the general election. Final results show Panarello receiving 2,536 votes to Szczurowski’s 2,462 — a margin of 74 votes, or roughly 1.5% of the total. In Berks County alone, the official tally was 826 votes for Panarello and 798 for Szczurowski.
During his campaign, Szczurowski emphasized improving the tone and effectiveness of board discussions. In interviews with the Boyertown Area Expression, he said he wanted to establish a more collaborative culture and expressed concern about what he characterized as disrespect and dysfunction among board members, administrators and members of the community. He pointed to his experience in the Coast Guard as an example of the positive leadership and teamwork he hoped to bring to the board.
Boyertown Forward described Szczurowski as a husband, father, and 24-year Coast Guard veteran who was interested in moving from “protecting our nation to strengthening our schools.” A U.S. Coast Guard publication also lists a Jason A. Szczurowski among personnel selected for chief warrant officer consideration in 2020, consistent with his reported military background.
Szczurowski now replaces Brophy, who had been a member of the Boyertown board since 2019. Brophy won his first election to the board in 2019 and was reelected in 2023; school-board records list him with seven years of service.
Brophy's tenure included involvement in some of the district's most contentious issues. Early in his first term, for example, he was among the directors who unsuccessfully sought to delay the closing of Pine Forge Elementary School. He also filed Right-to-Know requests concerning the district's capital fund in 2024.
The district's public announcement confirms that Brophy resigned and that his Region 2 seat became vacant, but it does not give a reason for his departure.
The change gives Szczurowski an opportunity to serve alongside the directors elected in 2025 and potentially shape the district's direction through the remainder of the current four-year term.
