Governor Tom Wolf announced a multi-million dollar plan to provide free school breakfast for all students across the state of Pennsylvania. The Universal Free Breakfast Program will go into effect Oct. 1, 2022 and run through the end of the current school year.
Unlike other meal programs, kids will automatically qualify regardless of family income. Doing so lowers the barrier to entry and helps feed more kids dealing with food insecurity. Research suggests that students who eat breakfast have better school attendance and achieve at a higher level. “It is completely unacceptable for a child to start the day hungry,” Wolf said in a press release. "“This investment in free school breakfast for all is an investment in a better, healthier, happier life for our kids now and in the years to come,” he concluded.
