National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996. For the rest of April, each day we will publish a poem: your favorite poem--one of your own or one by a published author.
Send your poem to janeEstahl@comcast.net with a sentence or two about yourself as the author or why the poem is among your favorites. And stay tuned for announcements of local poetry readings in the area that you may wish to attend to celebrate the integral role poets play in our culture.
I Love You, Rachel
by Dan Erdman
I love you, Rachel Maddow,
not in a torrid, sweaty, sexual way
of course, as after all, I am a happily married
and faithful man,
and you a lesbian.
But, I do love you, Rachel Maddow.
I love you, Rachel Maddow.
And it’s something special to me
to crawl under the blankets at 9PM
and listen to you organize
the chaos of the day
so that it all makes sense,
through your slightly uneven smile,
caffeinated deliverance,
and rapid fire hahahaha laughter
(when laughter is appropriate for the topic, of course);
it adds a cadence to the whole experience
for about 22 minutes straight
before the first commercial,
which is about the time my wife
finishes brushing her teeth
and comes to bed.
I love you, Rachel Maddow.
I love you, Rachel Maddow.
And I dream about getting on a plane,
you are there in the aisle seat, row 12,
I pass by you on my way to row 18,
lean over as I walk by and I say it:
I love you, Rachel Maddow.
You look up, that slightly uneven smile,
and with a hahahaha delivery and coffee breath
you tell me “I love you too… thank you, my friend”
.Then, before things get too complicated,
too personal or too uncomfortable for either of us,
I continue to my seat and sit down
and we both have a pleasant flight home.
I love you, Rachel Maddow.
