If involvement and excellence in extracurricular activities form the basis for senior spotlight, then a spotlight on this particular senior has been long overdue. Starting with field hockey in her sophomore year and ending with the recently concluded lacrosse season, Carol Sauppe has been nothing short of spectacular.
In this, her senior year, Carol served as co-captain of the field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams. In addition to all this, Carol also found time to attend to the business of the Girls Leaders Corps, serving as secretary. All this extra activity could lead to bad classroom grades, but Carol proves her versatility by being a high honor student.
During her senior hockey season, Carol led the Bearettes in scoring with 18 goals, including a 5-goal night game vs. Pottsgrove. Her teammates voted her the most valuable player at the awards banquet. In basketball, Carol was 3rd in scoring with 125 points, as well as the assist leader and quarterback of the Bearette's offense. Carol rounds out her find high school athletic career in the spring lacrosse season, when she finished second in scoring with two goals. Upon graduation, Carol will have received a total of nine varsity letters, a rare athletic achievement.
Carol feels that girls sports at Boyertown are growing. Evidence of this fact is the larger number of candidates each year and the high amount of student interest generated by girls sports. Carol also feels that although girls athletics at Boyertown are being more fairly treated by the Athletic Dept. each year, they still do not receive the equal treatment they deserve.
With regard to Carol's future it looks, to say the least, bright, she is the first girl athlete at Boyertown to receive an athletic scholarship. Carol was among 30 contestants invited recently to Temple University in Philadelphia for a try out day. The contestants competed in field hockey and lacrosse, with two scholarships being awarded in each sport. Carol placed first in the field hockey competition, and was a recipient of one of the four scholarships.
As you can see from all these accomplishments, when Carol Sauppe graduates in June, BASH will be losing a truly outstanding student.
