Award-winning Author Pamela M. Tuck Honors American Railroad History, Family Legacy & Community in New Book

BOYERTOWN, PA — Award-winning children's book author Pamela M. Tuck will celebrate the release of her newest picture book, Johnny Tunes and the Gandy Dancers, with a community Book Launch Party on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Boyertown Community Library, 24 N. Reading Avenue, Boyertown, PA.

Published by Lee & Low Books, Johnny Tunes and the Gandy Dancers is an inspiring historical fiction picture book that introduces young readers to the little-known history of the African American railroad workers known as Gandy Dancers. The story follows Johnny Tunes, a determined fourteen-year-old boy living with polio, who dreams of helping his sharecropping family achieve a better future. Through courage, perseverance, and the power of song, Johnny discovers that everyone has a gift that can make a difference.

The book is especially meaningful to Tuck because she co-authored it with her late husband, Joel S. Tuck, who passed away on November 11, 2014. Although Joel did not live to see the book published, his love of history and storytelling lives on through its pages.

"This book represents more than a story," says Tuck. "It is the fulfillment of a dream my husband and I shared together. It is a tribute to my great-grandfather’s legacy, the resilience of the African American railroad workers, and the power of hope through difficult times."

Pamela Tuck is the mother of 11 children, whom she raised after becoming a widow at just 42 years old. She credits her faith in God, along with the kindness and support of the Boyertown community, for helping her family navigate one of the most difficult seasons of their lives.

"Boyertown embraced my family when we needed it most," Tuck said. "Our neighbors, friends, school staff, and community surrounded us with love and encouragement. Hosting this celebration in Boyertown is my way of saying thank you. It brings me tremendous joy and honor to return to the community that nurtured my family and share this special book."
