Sources describe a “street fair” as a celebration of the “character of a neighborhood... usually held on the main street.” Sponsored by the Berks-Mont Business Association (BMBA), Boyertown’s “Philadelphia Ave. Street Fair” promises to be that and more.

Scheduled for Saturday, June 10, from 10:00am- 4:00pm, entertainment and games, foods and vendors, a petting zoo and special appearances by the cartoon character Bluey, and an array of vendor tables from businesses, individuals, and non-profit groups all promise a fun-filled and interesting afternoon.

The rain date is the following day, Sunday, June 11.

Ken Hunt, executive director of the United Way and long-time chairman of the BMBA committee that plans this event, provides some history of how the Fair evolved. “Going back decades, Boyertown had a multi-day sidewalk sale. There were many businesses on Philadelphia Ave., and they all put tables out and featured merchandise at discounted prices. It was a good way for store owners to clear inventory and make way for new goods. The event was held mid-week and attracted older shoppers since they tended to be retired,” Hunt shares.

“However, over time the number of businesses decreased, and it was decided to recreate the event by broadening its scope and audience appeal. This included making it family-friendly by moving to Saturday and offering food and entertainment and inviting non-profit groups and individuals from beyond Philadelphia Ave. to set up tables and participate,” he continues.

Tessi Melchior, recent BMBA president, appreciates the social opportunities the Fair provides.“I look forward to seeing everyone. This is one of those events where you constantly run into people you know. Everybody is there,” she says.

“I like the way people come out for this event and socialize,” Hunt agrees, adding “It puts the volunteers out in the community where they have a chance to meet people and make them aware of the services they provide. It also provides a rare opportunity for community members to thank those who provide much needed services, such as fire companies and ambulance personnel." After a brief pause, Hunt adds, "And you can't forget the funnel cake!"

Food trucks are expected to be plentiful and choices will include hot dogs, perogies, burgers, kettle corn, Betty’s Old-Fashioned Lemonade. The Salvation Army will also serve food and for the first time, a Mexican restaurant will participate as well.

Children will enjoy meeting the Disney Channel’s character, Bluey, who will make appearances from 10:15am -12:15pm and 2:15 – 3:15pm. The petting zoo is also likely to be a favorite activity, and Hunt hopes to have a firetruck  and possibly an ambulance on hand for children to explore.

Other entertainment includes Sunset Sky’s Music Duo (10am-12 noon); Boyertown Legionette Twirlers (11 am); Angela Evans Duo (12 noon- 2 pm); and Wild Roots Rising (2- 4:00 pm).

Members of the BMBA Street Fair Committee include Amy Evans, Greg Grays, Andy Herb, Ken Hunt, Vicki Kriczky, Melissa Reppert, Leah Ross, and Kim Walsh.
