April 22, 1940: Jerry Karver has been named the Berks County Outstanding Athlete for 1940. The two-headed, lanky runner from Boyertown High School is the first runner in Pennsylvania track history to win three state scholastic titles, in the mile, half mile and cross country, in two consecutive years, and he set records in all three: 4:27 in the mile, 2:2 in the half-mile and 11:15 in cross country.

The Olympic miler from Colebrookdale Township Gene Venzke predicts that Karver will be in the national headlines someday soon.
