By Margaret Leidy Harner from her book One Day at a Time: A Social History of Boyertown, PA.
April 24, 1941: Jerry Karver has thrilled the crowd at the Penn Relays with an electrifying finish in the Championship of America medley relay race. He carried the Boyertown team to victory in that feature high school attraction.
Having been handed the baton in ninth place, 35 yards back, at the three-quarter mark, Jerry reached the tape with a brilliant run, eight yards ahead of his nearest opponent, with a time of 4:26.
The Boyertown track ace and outstanding distance runner has established himself as one of the premier milers in the country with that exciting sprint, and he is off to Penn State in the fall to study Chemical Engineering. Jerry is not only a first class runner, he is also a first class student.
