“I AM: Proud”-- Donnie Ellixson Business Owner Celebrates Success

Ed: Running a business is stressful on many levels, but 2023 brought pride and success to some of Boyertown’s business owners including Donnie Ellixson, owner of the Tae Kwon Do Academy.

Cheers to another rocking year of students, staff and families overcoming obstacles.... crushing goals.... continuing to forge strong relationships while starting new ones.... and believing that by pushing our minds, body and spirit on a weekly basis, tomorrow we will be better than today.

As a member in the Academy... we don't settle for "this is the way it is." We are in charge of our own destiny.... We Make Our World Happen!! We problem solve and overcome.... we assess, plan, apply and push through... and we do all of this together. We are a family here. The energy in this Academy is amazing!!! We support each other 100% on and off the mat. We are brothers and sisters in training. Our bond comes from an appreciation of the blood, sweat and tears that we share on the mat. Our bond comes from a deep appreciation and respect of our martial arts lineage and traditions.

Thank you  Sabumnim John Chung for showing us the way. The heart, soul and dedication of Ellixson's Tae Kwon Do Academy Leadership is second to none. Our Instructors and Staff are here for one reason.... because they care and want to make a difference. I want to extend a sincere thank you to the Junior Staff, Assistant Instructors, Team Elite Parents and all members of this great Boyertown community who support what we do here. And of course BIG LOVE to my Team who makes this all possible: Mr. Gonzalez, Mrs. Ellixson, Mr. Rutter, Mr. Swenk, Ms. Hansford, Mr. Wagner, Mr. Omlor, Mrs. Burger, Mrs. Muzo.

To Jana, Tristan, Charlie and Piper.... I love you more than you know and do all of this for you. For those that don't know... 10 years ago... I took quite the gamble to build the new Academy. To do so we mortgaged everything we own, cashed in Jana's retirement, took out a personal loan and put 70k on credit cards.

We had 42 students and 8 units here at The Gardens of Boyertown. To go completely “all in,” we converted the upper floor of the Academy into an apartment and moved three kids into one bedroom.

Honestly, with my back against the wall, I couldn't have felt stronger... I was hungry and ready to hustle. The quote, “You don't know how strong you can be, until being strong is your only option” was me to the core. “If you build it, they will come” was my drive. I believed in myself and the people around me.

Ten years later... we are humbled to have 200+ dedicated students grinding, motivating and inspiring each other every week... The Gardens of Boyertown is full with 14 units!! Through the Academy and The Gardens, we are continuing to connect with good people and good businesses in the community. We are doing what we can to make a difference
.

Two years ago we started house hunting. With three teenagers still in one room and myself overcoming two bad knees, the last couple years has been a bit stressful and at times depressing. The thought of not being able to kick with my kids ever again set me back mentally. I'm happy to say, through therapy, my knees are improving; we just found our forever home and with the help of family and friends moved in on Dec 23, 2023. We couldn't be more thankful. I speak on behalf of my entire family when I say we are so looking forward to being on the mat intentionally and not just by default
