"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!" Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Parlor Announces Grand Opening
by Kim Heisler Slonaker
Boyertown is no stranger to ice cream! We all love our ice cream - even those of us who are lactose intolerant! So, adding a new Ice Cream Parlor in Boyertown is what Rachael Kehler is doing – just next door to her popular candy shop – The Peppermint Stick Candy Store!
You can step back in time to a nostalgic era at the Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Parlor, which will have the grand opening Friday, September 6th to Sunday, September 8th. Festivities will kick off at 4:30 pm on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Building a Better Boyertown and The Tri-County Area Chamber.
Located at 26 E. Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA, the custom-built 1940s-themed ice cream parlor and soda shop features authentic fixtures and décor carefully recreated by historic restoration craftsman Eugene Kehler. Using reclaimed lumber from local buildings, Kehler has brought the past to life with a soda fountain bar inspired by historic photographs.
Visitors can enjoy delicious ice cream and soda treats in a charming, vintage setting. As a special treat, anyone dressed in 1940s attire will receive a coupon for a free fountain soda to be redeemed on a future visit.
All about Ice Cream
Although there is a lot of conflicting information on when ice cream was really invented, we can all agree that it is a favorite treat for many. Did you know that it takes three gallons of milk to produce one gallon of ice cream? That means that the average cow can produce two to three gallons of ice cream per day! The United States is second to New Zealand for consuming the most ice cream followed by Australia in third place. The average American consumes over five gallons of ice cream per year with vanilla as the favorite flavor and chocolate syrup as the favorite topping. That means that we spend many hours eating ice cream since it takes an average of 50 licks to finish one scoop!
Ice cream sales increased when the methods of refrigeration and innovations in ice cream production were improved. The expansion of soda fountains played a large part in the ice cream boom, as everyone’s favorite treats were much more readily available. George Washington loved his ice cream as well as many other presidents, but Thomas Jefferson is known for being the first to write down the recipe for ice cream. In 1984, Ronald Reagan established the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day!
World Cow Mural Painting
On Sunday, September 8th, influencer and mural painter DJ Berry from World Cow will be creating a stunning mural on the side of the Peppermint Stick building and spreading his message of kindness that we are all spots on the same cow.
