With the winter holidays coming into focus, we begin to make mental lists of the things we must prepare to celebrate these holidays in our traditional ways.
Some of our traditions are national… the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Some of our traditions are local… the Turkey Day Trot. And some of the traditions are family and personally oriented… like the relatives who come to dinner and how you cook your turkey.
Sometimes, by circumstance or by plan, traditions are broken, but we mostly stick to them because they are repetitive and have a history of pleasing ourselves and others. Traditions provide predictability and security.
One largely shared tradition of Thanksgiving is that we take the time to think about, honor, and share the things and people for which we are thankful.
Recently, Kevin B, a Boyertown based Facebook group administrator, posted a question: “What is your FAVORITE thing about Boyertown? It can be a place, thing, or other. Please share. Let’s see what this little town means to YOU!”
In other words, what are the aspects of Boyertown area life for which you are thankful?
Group members offered 20 responses and other group members voted. Here are the results:
Jess W offers, “It’s safe and everyone has been really friendly since I moved here.”
21% of responders agree.
Tiny C, another group administrator, contributed, “Frecon’s Farm Store and orchard.”
That proved to be the second most popular choice at 12%
Coming in only 1 % behind at 11 % is Vanessa H’s suggestion, “All the cute events throughout the year.” And only 1% behind that is Adam F’s pick: “the Grill Shop.”
A second choice from Tiny C nailed 8% of the vote for “Peppermint Stick Candy Store.” Jonathan B grabbed 6% for “All the bears.”
Tied at 5% Brett S and Jonny H suggested “We take care of our own,” and “Brakeman’s Café,” respectively.
In another tie at 4%, Angi D excitedly proclaimed, “Everything!” and Pam V said, “the Boyertown Community Library.”
At 3%, Megan E suggested “Semper Pie,” tied with Brianna M’s vote for “Iezzi’s.
Jane R named “Grind” tying at 2% with Kate G’s “the park and playground.”
At 1%, in a four-way tie, Gabby A named the Colebrookdale Railroad; Eric P offered “Pack and Troop 545; Robert Hook suggested “Other Farm and Ironstone” and “Great town to walk around with or without the dog.”
“Taylor Backes” and “the Orioles” were also nominated by Stephen M and Clyde M, respectively.
Two things seem clear: Boyertown folks love to eat and there are many aspects of the town for which people are thankful!
