Krista Gross, Building a Better Boyertown’s Events Planner, was determined that the first annual “Making HERstory” event was more of an experience than a formal dinner. She has said, “I wanted a night where the women of our community felt heard.”
Part of her final plan was inviting the attendees to share their stories—stories of resilience, love, challenges and dreams. She explained, “When we share these stories, we remind each other that we are not alone. We find strength in our sisterhood, hope in our shared experiences, and inspiration in each other’s courage.”
And so, as part of the plan, to recognize the impact the women in our lives have made, Krista invited all those who purchased tickets to the event to send their stories of those women—past or present—who inspired them or made a difference in their lives. Friends, family members, historical figures or mentors were featured in a Wall of Women at the event.
Krista honored five women who made an impact on hers. In sharing Krista’s stories, I am reminded of the power we all have in one another’s lives. Sometimes a simple acknowledgement of an effort, a kind gesture, or offer of help sends immeasurable support at just the right moment.
Here, then, are Krista’s stories of inspiration and thanks:

To my incredible sister, thank you for being my rock and my safe place. Your unwavering support, kindness, and strength inspire me every day. Not only have you been an amazing sister to me but you have supported and loved my boys like they are your own. And watching you become a mother has been one of my greatest joys! You love fiercely and unapologetically and that has always been one of the things I admire about you. Thank you for not just being my sister—but my forever friend.

There are very few people that can say they have been friends with someone since birth, yet here we are killing it! From recording ourselves singing Beach Boy’s songs to our crazy college days, we have been through it all. Over the last year I have watched you conquer all the hardest things! You began to put yourself first and for that I will always be proud of you. There’s comfort in a friendship that has never needed an introduction, and I’m honored to call you my friend.

Starting middle school at a brand-new district was very overwhelming. I recall walking the halls, looking at all the friendships that formed long before I got there and thinking that I would never have what they have. That is until, against her better judgment, this amazing human became friends with a cheerleader (gasp)! And very quickly Sonja learned that cheerleading is in fact a real sport and my taste in music grew trifold. In the last few years, I have watched you take control of your own destiny. You continuously honor your truth and stand up for what you believe in and I’m so proud of you!

My Nanny was the strongest, most selfless person I know. She had the most wonderful ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room every time she talked to you. Nanny had 8 children, and I’ll never forget after having my third son, I asked her “Nan, how did you do this with 8?” and she quickly replied “I never took them anywhere, Silly; you are the brave one for taking them everywhere with you!” When she passed, she had 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, and that number has only grown since we lost her. If I am only half the grandmother that she was to all of us, my heart would be full!

Having a strong willed, supportive mom has helped shape me into the person I am today. It’s very apparent that watching her children grow into strong, kind, and capable individuals has been one of her greatest joys, and now seeing her grandchildren thrive fills her heart with even more happiness. Every milestone, big or small, is a moment of celebration for her because she knows the hard work, love and sacrifice that have shaped her family’s journey. She is, always has been and always will be our biggest cheerleader! Love you, Mama!
