Growing a Different Kind of School in Green Lane

Two local educators are celebrating the five-year anniversary of building their dream school in Green Lane, PA. Seeds Academy is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a K–12 non-public school dedicated to the independent journey of each learner within a highly differentiated, community-first environment.

As part of the Acton Academy network, Seeds has access to rapidly evolving, cross-curricular learning materials that allow the school to bring together some of the most effective elements of public education, Montessori, and homeschooling under one roof. At the heart of it all are two lifelong educators committed to reimagining what school can look like.

Seeds’ mission is simple: encourage learners to take ownership of their education while actively engaging with their community.

That mission comes to life through real-world, experiential learning. Local experts are regularly invited into the school to share their knowledge and experiences. During a unit integrating math, art, and architecture, for example, an experienced architect introduced learners to the tools of the trade and coached them as they designed blueprints for their own dream schools.

While studying immigration in the early 1900s, first-generation immigrants from Ukraine and the Philippines visited the elementary and middle school studios to share their personal stories. These conversations gave learners a meaningful window into real-world experiences, cultures, and perspectives that cannot be replicated in a textbook.

Community connections extend beyond the school walls as well. Through local outings, learners have visited businesses to explore how goods are created and brought to market, including a visit to State of Mind Apparel. They have also volunteered with local nonprofits such as Open Link, putting their writing and art skills to work by creating cards for Meals on Wheels deliveries.

Meanwhile, middle school learners are researching apprenticeships and employment opportunities as they begin exploring potential career interests. Rather than asking children at an early age, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, Seeds encourages learners to discover what they are capable of doing. One example is the school’s annual business fair, where students become entrepreneurs, developing and presenting their own businesses and learning firsthand what it takes to bring an idea to life.

The result of this unique structure is a community of learners who develop strong intrinsic motivation and a growth mindset as they tackle increasingly challenging goals. Through regular open-house exhibitions, students present their work and areas of study in creative, entirely student-generated formats. They learn to commit to their tribe, recognize and appreciate one another’s strengths and weaknesses, and experience the value of open communication within blended-age studios.

Parents and visitors frequently remark that Seeds learners seem to carry themselves differently from their peers. Their voices, confidence, and character are shaped by two powerful and complementary forces at the center of their educational experience: independence and belonging. The heart of any educational experience.

With more than 30 years of combined educational experience and research, the founders continue to shape and refine their vision within the Acton framework while remaining grounded in a core belief: the standardized, factory-model approach to education does not have to be the only option for families in the Boyertown Area, Perkiomen Valley, or Upper Perkiomen school communities.

As Seeds celebrates the first five years of hurdles, the founders remain eager to collaborate with others who want to connect with a community of motivated learners and driven educators. Whether you are an educator, local business owner, community organization, or simply a family curious about a different approach to education, Seeds Academy welcomes the opportunity to connect.

Visit the school's website to schedule a conversation or tour and see firsthand what Seeds Academy is growing in the community.
