The Optimist Club of Boyertown recently held an essay contest for the students of the Boyertown and Oley Valley School Districts. The topic for this year’s contest was “Who is an everyday hero who brings out the Optimism in you.”. The topic is selected by Optimist international each year. The winning essay was written by Tetje Williamson from Oley Valley High School and the runner up was written by Bode Brewer. The third-place winner was Mahlon Weidner.

At the February 27thh business meeting Tetje Williamson and Bode Brewer attended the meeting with their families to read their essays to the club. Both students were presented with medals for their achievement along with a certificate. Unfortunately, Mahlon was unable to attend.

“All three students did a wonderful job writing their essays,” said club secretary Phil Haddad. “ It was great to see students in the Oley Valley School District willing to try something new and for some step out of their comfort zone. Their teacher ( Dr .Lori Berryman) did a great job preparing her students with their essays. She (Dr. Berryman) is a wonderful teacher, who works tirelessly with her students and her optimistic attitude would make her a great optimist member.”

“On behalf of the Oley Valley High School AP Language and Composition class, we thank the Boyertown Optimist Club for providing the opportunity to be a part of the essay contest,” said Oley Valley English teacher Dr. Lori Berryman. “It was a cathartic experience to brainstorm and write about the optimism that exists in our lives and the people who are positive contributors to that. The students wrote on a wealth of topics from teachers to civil servants to athletes and beyond; it was an honor to see three Oley Valley students take the top spots in the contest. We look forward to participating in this essay contest in the future. “

Tetje essay was entered in the Optimist Atlantic Central District Essay contest. At the time of this press release the results from the district event were unknown.

“We look forward to working with the students in the surrounding area next year,” said Haddad.
