We have all heard the expression that "no man is an island." That phrase comes from 17th century British writer and minister, John Donne.
In his "Meditation XVII," Donne continues, "Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod [small piece of earth] be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less ...; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
Today the "Boyertown continent is the less" because of the loss of Craig Eddinger and so we share this statement from the "Boyertown Bears Legion Team," as posted on Facebook, and extend condolences to the Eddinger family.
"With great sadness the Bears share the loss of long-time coach, alum, father, husband, friend, hall-of-famer- among many other things- Craig Eddinger. Craig played for the Bears in 1970-71-72, where his teams won 3 straight Berks county titles and the 1971 team won the PA State championship. Craig also played for the St. Joe’s Hawks, where he was later inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame; he is also a member of the Tri-County Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Pennsylvania Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. From 1988 to 2019, Craig was an assistant coach for the Bears, compiling a record of 1311-373-16 (including a 550-87 record in the Berks County League) since that first season of 1988. Those statistics translate into an overall winning percentage of .776 and .863 in the league. That first 1988 team set a still-standing record with 64 wins in that rookie season of 1988 … not to mention a national runner-up finish. This past summer we had the pleasure of honoring Craig’s talents and dedication by inducting him into the Boyertown Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, and retiring his number- # 11. Craig has had an enormous influence on the Boyertown Baseball Community and his players. He will be greatly missed. Any past players are encouraged to send us photos with Craig to be shared later this week."
