Lisa Hogan, Boyertown Area School District Board Member, claims she has no artistic talent and was surprised, yet gratified at receiving the most votes for the bear she drew as part of a contest initiated by 5th grade students at Washington Elementary School (WES).

Reflecting on her drawing, she explains, "The black and red theme was a no-brainer, but the other elements of my decoration took some thought. I wanted to represent as many of the wonderful opportunities BASD offers our students as possible.

"From academics to sports, music, theater, and the many diverse club opportunities the district offers, BASD students have access to many different learning and development paths. As a mom, I know that many of the lessons that my children have learned were taught on the football fields, in the music and art rooms, and through the various other extracurriculars that the district offers.

"I wanted my Bear to represent these pathways to student success, as well as the pathways that our teachers provide in the classroom. I was honored to have my Bear selected as the winner and I appreciate all the effort that my colleagues put into their submissions, which in my opinion, were equally as Bear Proud as mine."

At a Boyertown School Board Committee of the Whole Meeting, 5th grade students at WES provided Board Members with a drawing lesson. They were tasked to draw bears for an art show and contest.

Each Board member's drawing was randomly assigned to a grade level at WES. Students and staff voted for their favorite drawing prior to the art show. Lisa, representing 2nd grade, received 57% of the votes.
