Freshkills: The New Wilderness, is a new exhibition that features the photography of Boyertown 1996 alum, Jade Doskow. Hosted by the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, New York City, the exhibit features 10 "large-scale pieces" from Doskow's "ongoing work as the Freshkills Photographer-in-Residence."
Doskow explains, Freshkills is the "notorious ex-landfill in Staten Island which is now transforming into one of New York City's largest parks of the future, now home to rare grasslands birds and ethereal native grasses that shimmer in the light." Comprised of 2,200 acres, the park will be close to triple the size of New York City's Central Park.
As a landfill, Freshkills began accepting trash in 1948. When it closed in 2001, as a result of community pressure, the landfill consisted of three mountains of garbage, ranging from 90 to 225 feet in height.
The exhibit also includes "a collaborative film/ sound piece with electronic composer Heather Campanelli, that Doskow describes as weaving "together a 30-minute piece with Campanelli's field recordings from the site and original compositions in dialogue" with Doskow's photographs.
The exhibit can be seen by appointment until Nov. 10, 2024. To schedule, contact the studio at jade.doskow@gmail.com
