National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996. For the rest of April, each day we will publish a poem: your favorite poem--one of your own or one by a published author.

Send your poem to janeEstahl@comcast.net with a sentence or two about yourself as the author or why the poem is among your favorites. And stay tuned for announcements of local poetry readings in the area that you may wish to attend to celebrate the integral role poets play in our culture.

The Month of Words

~ Mary Anne Arbo

All you fair troubadours of metrical composition.

Mix and mingle nouns with verbs and free verse.

Describe your world in stanzas and quatrains.

Free your jumbled words to paper,

and parchment.

Write, edit, repeat.

Accept poetry as gifts from a stranger.

Read poetry alone,

or in a local pub.

With wafts of cigarette smoke,

encircle your oratory of such passionate verbs.

Write, edit, repeat.

Click onto Zoom and poetry podcasts.

Scribble in your diary those pent up melodies,

by the light of a 4am moon.

Read your words as if it was your last breath,

upon this poetry world.

As we all write, edit, and repeat during Aprils.
