Riding the Rails Through History

In the countryside between Boyertown and Pottstown, Pennsylvania, the Colebrookdale Railroad — affectionately known as the “Hidden Valley Line” — invites visitors to step away from the present and experience a living slice of local heritage.

The original Colebrookdale line was chartered in 1865, and by September 6, 1869, trains were running between Boyertown and Pottstown to serve the region’s booming iron industry.  Initially, the railroad carried freight and passengers, linking the iron forges, mills, and furnaces along the Manatawny and Ironstone Creeks.  However, with industrial decline and changing transportation patterns, regular passenger service was discontinued (by around 1950) and portions of the line fell into disuse.

In 2009, Berks County acquired the line to preserve it, and tourist excursions began. Today, the Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust operates the railroad, offering themed rides, dining, and informative narration during the rides.

Why Visit the Hidden Valley Line?

Seasonal appeal. In fall, the foliage is spectacular; in winter, holiday-themed rides (e.g. Santa’s Polar Bear Express) add festive charm.

Educational & family friendly. The railroad’s narration, museum tie-ins (e.g. for the Troop Train), and sensory-friendly options make it accessible to a wide audience.

Supporting local heritage and economy. Your ticket helps sustain the restoration and preservation of this historic corridor, and reinvigorates a cultural asset for Boyertown and the surrounding communities.
