For livers
For the big brown organ that cleans our blood and keeps the right things in and takes the wrong things out.
For the kidneys downstream that do their damnedest to take over the work when livers fail, until they’re overwhelmed themselves (the little divas).
For the brains that run the show even when swimming in chemicals that aren’t supposed to be there.
For the heart — both the physical and the metaphyscal — which does not falter, but carries a load greater than anyone should bear.
For love…
For the dozens of doctors and nurses at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania who have guided my husband through the worst month of his life.
For the CNAs, the cleaning staff, the cooks and cafeteria staff, for the transport team, the pharmacy staff, facilities, procurement, and everyone who ensures the hospital is able to treat patients with love and dignity until they recover.
For the science, medicine, and technology, for the researchers, and the research that has come so far that Cystic Fibrosis is no longer a childhood disease, no longer a young adult’s death sentence.
For the “herds of lenovos” migrating the halls, doing rounds every day, working 24-hour shifts, and the residents learning about medicine every moment of their lives...
For the many many family and friends who have offered their help, and their patience especially when we didn’t know what we needed (and we still don’t).
For both of our moms and dads, for our brothers and sisters, for our niece and nephew, and for our collective dogs.
For the donor who gave the gift of life.
For the donor’s family, who are going through the worst day of their life today.
For Nathaniel, class of ’94, and his new liver.
For 32 years together, and hopefully 32 more.
— anne (kent) gibson, class of ’94, now in Pottstown, PA
[Editor's note -- All best wishes and prayers for well-being to Nate and to you, Anne.]
