As a child my grandmother often said, “Give me my flowers while I am living.” On my grandmother’s 79th birthday, I sent her a dozen long-stemmed roses. I promptly called her to remind her of what I thought she meant by those words of wisdom. She said, “ooh honey, I meant be nice and kind to me.”
What service looks like on any given day is without fanfare or merit. Divine guidance takes the lead when a need presents itself. Just yesterday, I was sitting at a stop light at a wide intersection. A mature adult male with a slight limp and greying hair approached my car. His sign read, “need food”. I politely declined because I had no change, he said, “thank you for talking to me.”
As I drove away, my heart felt grateful and sad at the same time. Tears filled my eyes as I thought a gesture as small as a 30 second conversation brought someone joy. Although I could not change his circumstances, I could offer hope. Observing in the moment becomes a pillar of understanding. A life’s past comes with us, and it connects us to our humanity. We know we can comfort others on a soul level.
