C'mon Out and Do the Turkey Trot!

On Thanksgiving morning, Boyertown’s Wellness Council is recruiting “gobble wobbles” (a recognized YMCA term certainly appropriate here!) to join a 5K timed run, or the more sedate I mile fun run/walk. If I had to guess, their thought process is to start the day feeling good by exercising the body and enriching the psyche before going home and gorging on all the fixin’s. It is also a way to say thank you to the world at large that you are still here. No agenda; just a whole lot of thanks!

It make sense to burn a few calories in the morning so that a lot more calories can be consumed to replace them in the afternoon? According to the organizers of the Boyertown Turkey Trot and the 900 “trotters’ from last year, it makes perfect sense.

Now in its tenth year, the Trot has been tremendously successful. Joe McGlinchey, retired high school counselor and avid runner, shares that when he went to register the other day, there were already over 1,000 participants. "It's a nice local race. It's great that so many former area residents who have relocated, return for the event," McGlinchey says, noting that he enjoys seeing many of the students he coached when he was the track coach at the high school.  McGlinchey also appreciates the community spirit expressed by the many local business sponsors.

Shannon Flick, an annual participant agrees. “It is fun. Many families come dressed in fun turkey outfits. It is a beautiful brisk walk AND I get to catch up with old friends and coworkers.” Her sister, Larissa Cheplick agrees. “You have to experience it to understand; it just makes you feel good.”

Everyone meets at Boyertown Community Park where the race will begin and end. The park is large enough to accommodate the vast crowd,  so you can hopefully meet up with your neighbors who live across the street, but whom you hardly ever see! There is even a one mile "Fun Run" for young children.

The route for this year's Turkey Trot.

If you have any Fall Fun Wear, put it on; costumes are encouraged and cheered. The forecasted Thanksgiving weather is supposed to cooperate and be nice so… it is becoming obvious that this year seems to have all the fixin’s for a great Turkey Trot. It just needs you!
