The Berks county Intermediate Unit held its 2026 Annie Sullivan Award [Annie Sullivan was the partially blind teacher who taught Helen Keller.] celebration.on April 8, 2026. The award honors educators who go above and beyond in supporting students with disabilities.
This year, Boyertown Area School District was honored to select Mrs. Eva-Marie Rickard, as our nominee for the honor.
Mrs. Rickard is a nurse who has worked in our elementary Life Skills Support classroom for 20 years. She currently provides care and support to students with intellectual disabilities, autism, multiple disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) at Washington Elementary.
Mrs. Rickard has been described as dedicated and highly experienced. Her sponsors say, "She is a trusted and integral member of the Life Skills Support team, collaborating closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, administrators, and families to ensure each student’s health, safety, and overall well-being. Her deep understanding of students’ medical plans and individualized supports allows her to respond calmly, effectively, and compassionately in both routine and emergency situations."
Her nomination goes on to say:
"She is particularly skilled at building strong, positive relationships with students who require significant medical and emotional support throughout the school day. Mrs. Rickard brings positivity and warmth to her work, intentionally creating joyful moments and sprinkling fun throughout the day with her cheerful attitude, festive tee shirts, and themed jewelry for every occasion. These small but meaningful touches help put students at ease and create a welcoming environment.
Equally important are the close and trusting relationships Mrs. Rickard has developed with students’ families. Families entrust their children to her care each day, confident in her expertise, compassion, and unwavering advocacy.
