Boyertown area resident Donna Stauffer shared this 100 -year old family recipe. She explains: “My husband's grandmother use to make these cookies and they became the family favorite. The recipe is probably over 100 years old. We call them Mammy Stauffer's cookies. I have been making them for over 60 years, but my family still says they are not like Mammy Stauffer’s....I think I do just fine!”
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Baking Time: 9-10 minutes
Yield: 20-30 cookies, depending on thickness
5 cups flour
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 egg
½ cups cold milk
1. Stir dry ingredients in a bowl, until mixed.
2. Add egg and stir with fork until distributed.
3. Add cold milk slowly, until the dough becomes a ball.
4. Roll out the dough. (You can divide it in half, but make your cookies pretty thick.)
5. Use cookie cutters of your choice.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes
[Tip: Cookies should end up about ¼ inch thick after baking.]
Thanks, Bob. Love these.
And now I know the Schmidt haus.
Fascinating research. Would love to learn more.
Thank you for this information. Wendel (correct spelling) Renninger was my 8th generation great grandfather. I’d be interested in any other information your research may have turned up on him.
