September 19, 1901: It took the jury two hours of deliberation to reach the verdict of guilty for Kate Edwards of the first degree murder on July 3, 1901, of her husband John Edwards, and they imposed the death penalty for the brutal slaying.
Standing before the jury, it was reported that she received the verdict with the greatest coolness and stolid demeanor. The principal witnesses against her were two of her children, 15-year-old Mary and 12-year-old Elmer, whose testimony convicted her.
John Edwards was intoxicated that night and fell asleep on the front porch of their home, after which Kate wrapped his head in a carpet and beat him to death with a hammer. She then buried the bloody carpet, hammer and the dress she had worn to do the deed.
Kate Edwards was never executed for her crime. She became very religious while in jail and was reported to have been a model prisoner. She was pardoned on October 25, 1913, and released from jail.
Patchy rain nearby, with a high of 66 and low of 60 degrees. Mist during the morning, overcast during the afternoon,
