It’s now back on Broadway, but you only have to travel as far as Boyertown to see it.
“Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy show based on a Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” will be coming to the stage of Boyertown Area Senior High March 13-16. Tickets are now on sale.
The story is about Queen Aggravain, who tries to prevent her son, Prince Dauntless, from getting married by requiring potential brides to prove they are worthy by passing ridiculous tests they cannot possibly pass. Finally, the Queen meets her match when Princess Winnifred, a high-spirited and unconventional swamp princess, takes the test of discovering a hidden pea beneath layers and layers of mattresses.
The show develops several themes surrounding friendship and community, leadership, and women’s empowerment.
Originally opened off-Broadway in 1959, the show was immediately successful enough to move to Broadway; the fairy tale on which the show is based, was written in 1835.
The show will run for four performances. Adults and children are sure to find humor in it. Tickets are now on sale for $15, and early purchasers will be able to grab the best seats. They can be purchased on-line by clicking here.
Tickets will also be on sale Wednesday nights starting January 15 6:00- 7:00 PM at the Boyertown Area Senior High auditorium lobby.
