A few weeks ago we published a story about mysterious lights in the sky that were seen over Bally. Area residents offered a variety of possible explanations. If you missed the article, you can read it by clicking here.
In response to the article, Craig Bennett, Expression writer and author of the book, More Things in Heaven and Earth, offers some thought provoking questions and observations:
"Interesting article about the 'New Year's Eve lights' sighted from Bally. Even more interesting photo at the end. I gathered from the article that most people apparently accepted, at least provisionally, the 'communications satellite' explanation.
"Communications satellites put into orbit for commercial purposes are essentially relays, just like the microwave relay towers we see here and there. Their orbit needs to be in sync with the Earth's rotation in order for them to remain at the same 'place' in space so that the transmitters that send them the signals to be relayed do not have to be 're-aimed' at random intervals to reach the satellites wherever they happen to be at that point. This being the case, such satellites would necessarily appear at the same place in the sky at the same time, night after night (or day after day, as the case may be).
"Has anyone ever seen these lights before? Has anyone looked for them since? Even if they were launched just before they were sighted, they would still be appearing in that same part of the sky each evening around 6:30. If that's the case, it's a good argument for the communications satellite explanation. If not... well, who knows?
"The incident reminds me a bit of the 'Phoenix lights' phenomenon from 1997, when a formation of lights remained above Pheonix, Arizona, for an hour or two (check the first section of MORE THINGS IN HEAVEN AND EARTH, p.35) and were witnessed by thousands of people. No adequate explanation has ever been offered for what these things were, where they came from, or why they visited Phoenix for the time they remained in the sky."
