Local Police Departments Warn About Recent Car Theft Attempts

If you live in the Gilbertsville- New Hanover area of the school district, your Ring doorbell camera app, like mine, has been messaging you frequent alerts about attempted car thefts.

Photos suggest that the culprits attempt to steal the car and when they are unsuccessful, they rummage through the contents of the car and take things they believe are of value. Unsurprisingly, they focus on cars that are left unlocked overnight.

In response to this growing problem,  local police departments have issued statements urging vehicle owners to lock their cars. They also have shared additional suggestions for protecting your property.

The Douglass Montgomery Police Department issued a  message, including tips to help prevent theft:

"The Douglass Township Police Department would like to take a moment to remind the community about an important matter—vehicle security and the ongoing effort to prevent vehicle break ins and car theft. Vehicles are essential to many of us, whether for commuting to work, school, or other necessary activities. Unfortunately, vehicle break ins and car theft remain a concern in our community.

"Tips to Protect Your Vehicle:

"Always Lock Your Car: Even if you're just running a quick errand, always ensure your car doors are locked. Thieves often target unlocked vehicles because they offer an easy opportunity for theft.

"Don't Leave Valuables Inside: Never leave valuables, including electronics, purses, or shopping bags, visible inside your vehicle. Thieves are often drawn to cars with items in plain sight.Keep Keys and Documents Secure: It's crucial not to store spare keys or important information inside your vehicle, especially in the glove compartment.

"Be Aware of Your Surroundings: If you're parked in a public space, try to park in well-lit areas or areas with visible surveillance cameras when possible. Criminals tend to target vehicles in isolated or poorly lit spots.

"Community Effort:

"Your role in preventing vehicle theft goes beyond securing your own car. Encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to lock their cars and avoid leaving valuables inside. By sharing these tips and keeping each other informed, we can build a stronger, more vigilant community that actively deters criminals.

"Stay Vigilant and Report Suspicious Activity:

"If you notice any suspicious individuals or behavior around parked vehicles, don't hesitate to report it to the police. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you suspect something unusual. Every small observation can help prevent crime.

"Together, we can create a safer, more resilient community. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in keeping our community safe!"

In a community alert the New Hanover Police Department summarizes, "In the past 48 hours, the New Hanover Twp Police Department has received multiple reports of thefts from vehicles, including one stolen car. In every case, the vehicles were left unlocked." New Hanover also shares, "To report suspicious activity, contact New Hanover Twp Police at 610-327-1150."
