The countdown is on for the Marching Unit's trip to Romania. The 120 participating students will be leaving on February 27 and will be returning on March 10. Accompanying the band and band front members, will be approximately 41 adults and 8 BAHS faculty chaperones. The faculty chaperones include Mr. Saylor, Mr. Kuser, Mrs. Danner, Mrs. Huffert, Mrs. Roth, Mr. Kulp, Mr. Mikso, and Mr. Blocher.

This trip actually came about through a prior experience at the Boston Music Educators National Conference two years ago. After that trip, the marching unit was given a favorable reference by the coordinator of the Boston conference. Eventually the American Youth Performs, Inc. became the intermediary. And from there the trip came to be.

Mr. Saylor, band director, states "The marching unit's responsibility representing our school, community, even nation will be a very important aspect of this trip. The unit will try to create and spread friendship through their music and by their associations with Romanian people."

In preparation for the trip, there are various orientation sessions. The staff feels that a large part of the members' learning experience will be in their "getting acquainted" with Romania before the trip. The sessions include important details for the students to benefit from and usually are conducted during the 8th period, four days a week.

There is a varied list of performances and activities scheduled during the unit's stay in Romania. The list includes concerts, a unique presentation opening the Romanian National Soccer Season in Bucharest, indoor presentations in sports halls, athletic competition with fellow students and with Romanian students, and an opportunity to hear Romanian students perform at the music high school. Sightseeing will also be a major activity and this will include visits to the Romanian National Museum, several castles, and other landmarks.

While in Romania, the unit's performances will be like those at our own football games and concerts. Mr. Saylor has indicated that the only adaptations will be those necessary to deal with facilities and space at various locations.

In addition to preparing for their trip, the marching unit is also busy rehearsing for their concert on February 14 and 15.
