Earlier dusk, falling temperatures, and the opening of school signal that it’s time for the Great Swamp Picnic.

Annually sponsored by New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gilbertsville, this year’s event runs from 4:00- 8:00 p.m. at the church picnic grove on Swamp Picnic Road, between 663 and Lutheran Road. The event will be held rain or shine, and picnic-goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

Always a major attraction, food choices will include pulled pork sandwiches, grilled chicken, potato salad, baked beans, french fries, ice cream and more. This year’s menu also features the return of hot roast beef, an offering that dates way back in the history of the picnic.

Free children’s games, a flea market, beginning at 4p.m., and a concert performed by the much loved Boyertown Area Alumni Band from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. promise a good time for all.

Always held the fourth Saturday in August, local church records validate the picnic tradition has endured over 100 years. It is a warm, friendly event that focuses on positive community spirit. As church Pastor Staub recently remarked, “It is truly great family fun for all ages,” and Susan Gutshall added, “It’s a great day full of local goodness—with people, with food, with fun.”
