New Hanover Township is pleased to announce a Free Tree and Shrub Giveaway event for township residents, scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Keystone 10 Million Tree Project, Montgomery County Master Watershed Stewards, and New Hanover Township, aiming to enhance the local environment and promote community engagement.

Residents are invited to select from a variety of trees and shrubs available at the event. A comprehensive list of the available species can be accessed on the event's official website:https://sites.google.com/view/new-hanover-tree-giveaway/home.

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, April 12, 2025
  • Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Location: New Hanover Township Building
  • If any trees are left over, they will be available on April 19 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Available shrubs are set to include: Arrowwood Viburnum, Black Chokeberry, Common Ninebark, Gray Dogwood, Sandbar Willow, Silky Dogwood, Smooth Alder, and Winterberry.

Available trees are set to include: Allegheny Serviceberry, Basswood, Black Willow, Hackberry, Honey Locust, Hornbeam, Pin Oak, Red Maple, Red Oak, River Birch, Silver Maple, Swamp White Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, Sycamore, and Tulip Poplar.

Important Notes for Participants:

  • Transportation: Attendees are encouraged to bring a box, bag, or bucket to transport their selected tree or shrub home safely.
  • Pot Return: To support sustainability efforts, please return the pots to the township building after planting. Recycling these pots helps reduce costs for future events, allowing for more free trees to be distributed.
  • Bird Netting Advisory: There is a limited supply of bird netting for the tops of the tree tubes. If netting is unavailable at the event, residents are advised to purchase bird netting from local fabric stores, such as Jo-Ann Fabric, and secure it to the top of the tube with rubber bands. This precaution is crucial to prevent birds from becoming trapped inside the tubes.

This event underscores New Hanover Township's commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement. By participating, residents contribute to the beautification and ecological health of the township.
