National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996. For the rest of April, each day we will publish a poem: your favorite poem--one of your own or one by a published author.
Send your poem to janeEstahl@comcast.net with a sentence or two about yourself as the author or why the poem is among your favorites. And stay tuned for announcements of local poetry readings in the area that you may wish to attend to celebrate the integral role poets play in our culture.
It is said that in the beginning was the Word. Teacher and writer Sandra Williams offers a favorite poem celebrating language.
by Rudolf Steine
To one who understands the sense of language
The world unveils itself
As image.
To one who hears the soul of language
The world opens itself
As being.
To one who lives the spirit of language
The world gives the gift
Of wisdom's power.
To one who can feel the love of language
Language lends
Its own strength.
So I will turn heart and mind
To the spirit and soul
Of the Word;
And in my love for it
Feel myself
Now whole.
Patchy rain nearby, with a high of 51 and low of 38 degrees. Don't forget your umbrella! Light drizzle in the morning, overcast during the afternoon, partly cloudy during the evening, overcast overnight.
I found this to be quite thought-provoking.
Beautifully done, Anne Kent. Written as one who loves words, the smell of books, and everything to do with liver transplants.
So happy to hear Nathaniel is on the mend.
Just in time for the best holiday of the year.
